2-D STEAMPUNK

Steampunk fiction’s fanciful imagery is rich fodder for illustrators working to convey an idea through an image. An artist working in two dimensions can capitalize on the many concepts and metaphors within the genre (for example, man vs. machine, technology gone out of control, the dangers of over-industrialization). Mechanical contraptions might portray industry, corporations, or automated processes. Seemingly old-fashioned Victorian characters caught in the midst of burgeoning technology might express the perils of progress, confusion, or fear. Mad scientists might convey creativity, innovation, or horror.

Award-winning illustrator and animator Richard Borge often uses elements of Steampunk in his mixed-media artwork. In censorship, a mechanical eye is trapped within a cage, and a mannequin guardian controls the only key. In legislation, Borge uses Steampunk-style gears, wires, cogs, and rivets to create a Rube Goldberg–like contraption. In transhuman, a retro-futuristic helmet (complete with propeller) and the side sketches suggest a mastermind at work.
